Introductory training course on the physical protection of radioactive sources in use

This training course discusses the IAEA Nuclear Security Recommendations on Radioactive sources, the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources. 

The participants study the consequences of loss of control and malicious use of radioactive sources and review the response to the nuclear security events.

The training course covers the components of nuclear security regime, the importance of the components for providing effective security of radioactive sources, the goals and main elements of the nuclear security regime.

The categorization of radioactive sources is studied in accordance with the IAEA Recommendation. Application of the graded approach to provide the security of radioactive sources is discussed.

The participants discuss threats, characteristics of threats, the insider threat as well as the measures against the insider threat. They also get knowledge on the basics of risk management.

The training course presents information about goals, objectives, design stages and principles of developing a security system for the radioactive sources. 

The participants learn the variants for building delay system, installation of intrusion detection systems on the perimeters of the facility security layers and radioactive source storages. They also understand the application of situation assessment and access control systems at the areas of use and storage of radioactive sources. 

Practical exercises are addressed to the sources categorization, design of a security system for the radioactive sources of a hypothetical facility. They include analysis of the adversary and security forces actions. The participants guided by instructors develop a security plan for providing security of a hypothetical facility.
