A two-week "International Training Course on Nuclear Security in Practice: Field Training for University Students" organized under the auspices of the IAEA was held at the site of the Rosatom Technical Academy in Obninsk. 35 university students and young specialists from 15 countries have been trained in Russian and English. The main specialization of the trainees is to ensure security of nuclear materials and nuclear facilities.
Experts from the IAEA, Jordan and Kazakhstan took part in the course. Instructors of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Institute of the Rosatom Technical Academy shared their long-term experience, knowledge and best practices in the field of physical protection, which have successfully proven themselves in the IAEA member countries.
During the classes, the trainees got acquainted with international documents in the field of nuclear security, the principles of the formation of a project threat, a differentiated approach and other basic principles of building physical protection systems that meet the recommendations of the IAEA and reflect the best international practice. During practical demonstrations, the course participants studied such components of the complex of technical means of physical protection as engineering barriers and structures, access control and management system, external and internal sensors of the security alarm system, optoelectronic surveillance system. As a part of the course, the students also visited the museum of the World's First nuclear power plant, located on the territory of the Leipunsky Institute of Physics and Energy.
In order to consolidate the acquired knowledge, young specialists, under the guidance of instructors of the GNSSI, carried out the design of a physical protection system for a hypothetical educational facility "Hypotron". The results of the defense of design solutions showed the effectiveness of the practical orientation of this course.

The training course on ensuring nuclear security is in demand among young specialists from different countries, including Rosatom's partner countries, and is held at the site of the Rosatom Technical Academy on a regular basis. The course program successfully combines both advanced theoretical foundations of physical protection and applied modules based on the modern training infrastructure of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Institute, including training grounds, training laboratories and test benches.
