Rosatom Tech Specialists win IAEA Data Visualization Challenge

Rosatom Technical Academy Specialists became one of the three winners of the data visualization challenge organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency in preparation for the “International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Energy” and will present their project at the Conference.

The project submitted for the challenge by Ivan ANDRIUSHIN and Evgenii VARSEEV is an animated visualization of analysis of large data sets on CO2 emissions depending on various indicators (GDP, electricity consumption, nuclear energy share in energy mix) for each country. The visualization was done by means of Python programming language – a modern tool used worldwide as a standard for big data analysis.

“The problem of climate change is becoming more acute every year. Latest forecasts show that we are steadily approaching a “point of no return”, after which it will become impossible to stop global warming, but only to mitigate its consequences instead. We are actually representatives of the last generation, which may change the situation. Such competitions allow to attract additional attention to the existing problem and to demonstrate the ways of solving it, in particular, through the use of nuclear power”.

That is why my colleague and I teamed up and independently gained training on the use of modern computer tools for the analysis and processing of large data sets. The Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Energy will be held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna from October 7 to 11, 2019 and will be the Agency’s first event dedicated to this topic. The Conference will be attended by top management representatives of the IAEA, the Nuclear Energy Agency and the International Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as well as the energy sector organizations of the IAEA Member States. Data Visualization Challenge Winners will present their projects at the Conference Side Event.
