In May 2025, specialists from the Institute of Global Nuclear Safety and Security Institute of the Rosatom Technical Academy conducted three specialized training courses for the staff of the physical protection units of the "Akkuyu" NPP on the territory of the Republic of Türkiye. The courses marked another step towards building a highly qualified team capable of ensuring reliable protection for the world's largest nuclear power plant.
Within the "Physical Protection of Nuclear Facilities" course, participants studied in detail the fundamental principles of organizing and ensuring physical protection at nuclear sites, the regulatory and legal framework, as well as the specifics of designing and operating engineering and technical means. Participation in interactive sessions simulating real threat scenarios helped deepen the understanding of complex processes and hone decision-making skills in extreme situations.
The course focused on the physical protection of radioactive sources during their use, covering issues such as categorizing radioactive materials, threat assessment, and measures to prevent unauthorized access. As the experts explained, these measures are critically important for organizing the safe handling of ionizing radiation sources, preventing incidents, and maintaining a high level of responsibility at all stages of working with devices containing radioactive materials.
The course on the implementation and operation of engineering and technical physical protection systems for nuclear facilities helped specialists from AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC evaluate innovative technologies and modern solutions used in security systems, as well as discuss the challenges and prospects for their development in a rapidly changing technological landscape. During the course, participants gained in-depth knowledge about the technical features of modern protection systems, methods for testing and maintaining them, along with practical skills in organizing interaction between various departments responsible for nuclear security.

The physical protection courses have been adapted to the conditions of the future operation of the nuclear power plant under construction in Türkiye. The training of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC employees is being conducted by the Rosatom Technical Academy in stages, as part of a comprehensive plan for preparing NPP physical protection specialists in the field of nuclear security, which is designed with a perspective extending to 2027.
Since the beginning of 2022, over 500 specialists and employees of the physical protection units at the "Akkuyu" NPP have undergone training in various areas. This demonstrates the high level of attention given to nuclear security issues and the continuous improvement of the personnel's professional competencies.
